Back to School Otaku

Sadly for many of us it is time to register and get back into the routine of school. School is a rather hard atmosphere for many otaku since anime/manga is typically looked down upon. I myself living in 4 different states attending over 8 schools am used to being looked down upon because of anime. Does that stop me from liking it though? No way. I have previously read an article stating that anime/manga should be kept subtle. You should not over express things. I for one stand by my fandom and would like everyone to know it.

For the main thing I have already been pin pointed around school as that kid who loves all things Japanese. I know this because….well people have told me. Does that offend me? Not in the least bit. I quite enjoy it actually. I am a big fan of screaming out I am an otaku through what I wear. As a new blog writer I would like to share with you my way of dressing back to school, with even some heads up to decking out your new dorm/apartment for the college students.

Let us keep in mind this is not an article going over fashion tips. I know nothing about fashion nor do I want to. Anyway let us get started.

Shirts

There is something I would like to point out about anime apparel of any sort. You have to decide between one of 2 things. Wearing a general otaku shirt such as this?

Or would you like something that shows your appreciation for a certain anime/manga?

This is all totally up to you. Personally speaking though I like to have both. I want to have some that represents a show I am simply crazy about and some that represent general otakuism.

Hoodies:

We all like to wear hoodies, jackets, pull overs, whatever you want to call them. Lets face it, in the morning the idea of wearing a hoodie seems a bit more relaxing than a t-shirt. Teachers have a bad habit of keeping classrooms cold, typically I tend to wear a hoodie every day just in case. No one likes to work in the cold.

The thing I want to tell you about a hoodie….wear one that you KNOW you will like for a long time. For instance do not buy one of a show that you have seen one time, or are still watching. It may end in a manner you do not prefer and then you are with a 30 dollar or more hoodie of a show you do not like as much. Hoodies need to be based on general otakusim typically. Here is an example of a nice design for a jacket the shows your love for anime/manga/japan.

Now that we have hoodies out of the way lets move on to other things. Also a nice heads up. This jacket is from Jinx and I submitted a photo of me wearing it. I am only going to tell you the user name it was under is Killer_Kyle. Find the right one and you get bonus points in my book. Also I can list you in my blogroll or something haha.

Caps:

I am not going to do much detail on this. Simply if you wear hats..buy one. Since this is a back to school post it would be wasteful since most schools will not let you wear a hat, and if you happen to wear one it messes your hair up pretty bad XD. No one wants to back to class with hat hair.

Accessories:

This is the choice of the buyer. Keychains are something nice to get, but only if you will actually use them. I never use that sort of thing and never buy it.

Wristbands:

Arm wear, not sure if you are into this or not, but some people are. Sweatbands seem to be fairly popular. Though it just depends on what you think. At a more sensible position they make it more comfy to write due to it working as a wrist cushion, also makes your wrist really hot XD.

School Supplies:

These are always nice, but sometimes tend to be wasteful. For instance….anime pencils. I have seen them though do not remember where. Maybe in elementary this was nice but in high school you typically never have the same pencil by the end of the day. Though one thing that is nice is a binder. Most classes like you to have a binder for every different subject. Though who ever listens XD. I always have one very large binder for everything, and that binder I liked to deck out with Japanese fandom. How? Simple, print out pictures of your favorite anime/manga and stick them on. Best thing to do it get one of the cheaper binder with the plastic cover to slip paper down into ^_^

Sorry for the lack of pictures, but I will be putting some more up here.

Backpack:

Sometimes we want to carry our otakuism where ever we go. We need a large backpack to carry our anime goodies we bring to school. For most of us manga to read during the down time. Messenger bags are typically the best route to go. Personally I do not own one, but have considered it for a long time. Since this is something you will be seen with everyday, keep it general otaku designed with some type of kanji or something of that sort. That is just an advisory though, you can get something like this if you really want to.

Let me say this though. Carry light, and never carry anything too expensive. If you have a very rare figma you want to show your buddy at school. Invite him over, sometimes other people do not understand otakuism and think it is just a doll or something of the sort, toss it around the room, steal it, whatever. No otaku needs to go through the loss of losing a rare and precious piece of anime merchandise.

Dorm decorations:

Alright this is for the college people here. So you are going to be out of the house and need to decorate your dorm or apartment. The obvious thing here is posters and wallscrolls. Wallscrolls are amazing pieces of anime merchandise and really make a wall something to look at. Posters as well for that matter. Simple as that.

Here is a wallscroll I have hanging up if you are curious as to what it actually looks like.

Another thing to use as decoration in your new home is…well you anime DVDs or manga books. The covers to these things are great pieces of work and it makes no sense to keep them locked in a drawer. Most otaku display their collection anyway, but for those who do not….DO IT. Even if you do not have that many put them up anyway, seeing them may encourage you to buy more.

That is all for my back to school post. I wish you luck and hope I helped. Go forth and let otakuism seep from your being as you walk the hallways. Show no shame for your fandom.

I did something special for you too. Click on the images to take you to the actual product to buy for yourself ^_^. I am such a nice blog writer.

lol, I probably will never use something like that in school XD, well maybe a shirt… I personally don’t like to scream to the world that I like anime and almost all about Japan XD, I try to not talk to my friends that much about anime, except of course whit those who like anime like me ( and I have a lot of friends who watch or have watched anime : )

Nice post, I don’t go to school anymore but it’s still cool to read. I would wear the Otaku shirt with pride, but if there was a character or anime series shirt that I really liked the artwork and the character/series I’ll wear that with pride all the same. I just recently got my Hatsune Miku shirt and I love it. BTW I’ll add your blog to my blogroll ^^

Ha, you have some nice gear. I love the shirt that said Otaku.

Just wondering, are you a Gundam fan? If so, you can rig up a master grade kit and install a USB powered LCD light into one. The eyes glow when you plug it into your PC/Laptop. That’s something I’m going to do before school starts and bring it with me to university ^_^

Here’s the link for hooking up the light into the kit http://www.marvinryan.com/blog/2006/09/12/how-to-usb-your-gundam/#comment-3423 The site is down right now though. I’ll eventually write a tutorial for hand brushing, since its largely underrated.

    Oh my gosh, I was looking for back to school stuff, and I’m so glad I found that Otaku t-shirt! I’m trying to get my mom to buy as much anime stuff as possible for back to school… but most of it is too expensive. ^_^;

Glad I was of help to you ^^ typically t-shrits with anything anime will cost a lot more. Typically 20-15 dollars. If you ever find anything for 15 or less I say get it.
